MCFC

This weekend was a whirlwind!

Friday I got into Johanna, since it’s Mockingjay weekend, and we ran up to the con for a couple of hours. I only took my little camera that night, so my handful of pics aren’t that great.

Then we went and grabbed dinner and went home. Johanna was MUCH more comfortable in Memphis November weather than Atlanta August… LOL. Seriously I could have worn it a good bit longer, except the earring which was squeezing my ear WAY too tight.
I also wore jeans and a pair of brown boots I had at home under it. When I was getting dressed I was like, “I’m too cold to take off my jeans” so I just kept them on, hahaha.

Saturday was a whirlwind. I had to sleep in curlers overnight so naturally I didn’t sleep well. Got up and get into my Marie Antoinette TARDIS, then headed up to the con to meet Ash. Chase had to literally SHOVE me into the backseat of his car – it’s a Sequoia that does not have running boards so I just could not get myself up in there LOL

I only have one pic from Saturday – everything else from that day is on Chase’s camera and he hasn’t given me those pics yet! But here’s my one pic. Ash looking sad that I didn’t want the Jar Jar statue she wanted to get me for Christmas.

The TARDIS was a lot of fun to wear though it was super crowded and hard to squeeze thru the crowds sometimes! We did get to run into directorbear which was an awesome surprise.

So after a bit we headed home and grabbed some lunch on the way. Because of the I-40/240 construction we had to take a really wonky way to and from the con, it made the trip take twice as long. So by the time we got home I had to scarf my food down and run go change into Peggy and then immediately hop back in the car to get back in time for the costume contest prejudging. Chase had to lift me up into the car once again because I couldn’t get myself into the front seat in that skirt, hahaha.

Pre-judging was fun. The other judges (Glitterz Cosplay and CallieCosplay) were both fantastic to work with. It was so much fun getting to see so many costumes up close and hear why people chose the character they did and how they made their costume. Pre-judging went way over but thankfully the contest ran smoothly and not TOO much behind schedule. It was difficult to pick winners and I wish we could have had just 3 or 4 more awards we could have given!

Well, I have to make an admission now; remember I just said Chase has to lift me into the car? I think that when I first tried to climb in by myself, I exacerbated an existing problem with my Peggy skirt. I’d noticed at GMX that my back seam was looking a little rough – I thought I’d just forgotten to rehem the inside of the splits after I decided not to put the pleat in before Dragoncon. I mentally added that to my “fix” list and promptly forgot. Well as I got dressed Saturday I noticed it again, and just had Chase clip the threads that were hanging off and figured it was fine for tonight.

Turns out it wasn’t – what I thought was just an unfinished hem was actually the back seam of the skirt coming undone. About half-way through the night I realized the back felt a little more breezy than it should, especially when I sat down. I realized what was happening, and Chase went and found me a sewing kit – but I never had a chance to fix it, because the night was so busy. Thankfully when I stood up and pulled the skirt lower down my hips, it wasn’t terrible – it had probably come undone about 3 inches or so. It held out for the rest of the night, but I had a little bit of panic about it. It’s probably the worst costume malfunction I’ve ever had, and it WOULD happen on a night I’m judging and walking across a stage in front of a bunch of people, and where I had NO change of clothes what-so-ever or a room to go back to! LOL.

So, things to consider for the future: firstly, don’t skip over double checking everything right before Dragoncon. Secondly, I have a dry-erase board in my office I really need to hang up and write down repairs that need made to costumes so I don’t forget. Thirdly, carry a change of clothes to local cons!

Sorry that got long and probably boring, haha.

Anyway, Sunday we decided not to head up. It was rainy and dreary, and Chase had a photoshoot to prepare for that afternoon, so we sat it out.

But boy is MCFC getting big! It’s very nearly outgrowing its venue. We had so many contestants for the costume contest and had to turn more away after forms ran out. With MidSouthCon and Anime Blues Con and Memphis Comics Expo, Memphis is getting a very exciting convention circuit!

I’ll have some pics to post hopefully tomorrow šŸ™‚
