Glimmer – She-Ra: Princess of Power

Made for: Dragoncon 2013

Background: We put these together for a He-Man/She-Ra group at Dragoncon 2013! The idea was to do a somewhat more realistic, “Game of Thrones” look.

Patterns Used:
Simplicity 5006, Simplicity 4433

Bodice:
For my costume, I started out by making a base corset out of cotton & canvas. I found some purple suede I liked and covered it in that – I have never had more issues sewing leather than I did with this suede (even the leather I used for my Boushh pants didn’t cause so many issues!). Of course after breaking several needles getting it and my boot covers put together, I for what-ever masochistic reason decided I wanted to embroider the leather corset, too. It took a pair of pliers and a heavy duty thimble but I managed, haha.

Boots/Pants/Shorts:
My boots I bought online and repainted the sole, then re-covered them in my purple leather. The pants and bottoms I made of stretch milliskin – I dyed both of them – they were originally both a light blue. I darkened up the blue for the pants (and also embroidered them, too), and the bottoms a darker purple to match my leather. (I made the bottoms since at the time I wasn’t sure I was going to do a skirt ala the action figure, or bodice/bottoms ala the cartoon – but I ended up wearing both.)

Wig:
The wig was fun; it was originally a “dusty rose” Luthien wig from Arda Wigs. I had planned on keeping that colour until once I got everything else assembled, it didn’t look right anymore. I decided to dye it purple – I used sharpies and got it to a “dusky lavender” that still has some pink undertones – so I didn’t get COMPLETELY away from the pink hair.

Skirt/Cape:
My skirt I made out of silk chiffon, and decided I wanted a pretty cape, too. I dyed both of them, and let them dry wrinkled to create a gauzy effect. I beaded the lower edge of the skirt in some various purple and lavender stones and beads I had.

Armor:
The shoulder armor, chestpiece, boot pieces, and parts of the belt were all made from Worbla. The chestpiece is sewn onto the corset so it’s all one piece. I had the worst time with those boot pieces – we could not get them glued down and I ended up sewing them in place. Even then I popped part of one free when putting it on at Dragoncon – so that’s something I’d like to revisit and fix. Post-Dragoncon I ended up cutting them down shorter so I didn’t have to deal with getting them to stick around the bend of the ankle.

Accessories:
The belt was made of leather with worbla decorations and painted. The tiara was made of vac-formed plastic using my head form as a base, and Chase sculpted and made my staff.

Bow:
I also made the top, pants, cape and sashes for Chase’s Bow costume. He made most of his accessories out of craft foam and worbla, and I repeated the embroidery from my Glimmer pants on his shirt.
