Lady Blackhawk – Birds of Prey

Made for: Dragoncon 2011

Background: Thought this would fun to make 🙂

Patterns Used:
Vogue 8301

Jacket:
I had a pattern in my pattern collection that was very close to the jacket – just a few tweaks needed. Used a black blend material for the hat, jacket and skirt, lined in lightweight lining material. The jacket zips up on the inside, and then closes over the shoulder and down the side with snaps. I added the black buttons, though in 2013 I replaced them with brass buttons (since the black ones didn’t show up very well in photos).

Skirt:
I couldn’t find a pattern to use for a skirt, so I just made it up as I went along. It ended up being a little big on me, so I’ll need to take it up, eventually.

Hat:
The hat I bought online, pulled all of the accessories off and re-covered it in my fabric.

Patches:
The patches were fun – I bought patch blanks and embroidered the hawk symbol on. I was about halfway through the big one when I realised I’d done it backwards! I was so happy with how they were turning out I decided to just keep going – oh well!

Accessories:
The belt was made of black leather and elastic, and snaps closed. The buckle was just craft metal glued onto the front. The gloves were just cheapie white costume gloves rolled down. (but it was so hot at dragoncon I went without them!) For my white backdrop shoot I used my white leather Hoth Leia gloves.

History: For Dragoncon 2013, I went back and replaced all of the black buttons with gold ones so they’d show up better. I like the look much better!
