Romana I – Doctor Who (The Ribos Operation)

Made for: Dragoncon 2013

Background: Seems like I’m always making costumes to go with K-9 🙂

Journal Entries: Read more at my Romana I tag

Patterns Used:
Simplicity 9891, Simplicity 9887

Dress:
I started out on this costume by ordering 8 yards of JetSet Poly from Joann’s (same material I’ve used for ANH Leia/Ceremonial Leia). I had to double the fabric over since it’s very thin – even with two layers it’s still a little bit see-through. I used Simplicity 9891 as a jumping off point for the dress.

I originally tried building the pleats into the dress, but I wasn’t happy with the way that was looking. I ended up ordering more fabric and re-cutting the front sections, and then adding the pleated sections as a separate piece. I hand-sewed the pleats into place, and then pressed them. The pattern for the sleeves came from a different pattern, modified to make them longer.

Cape:
For the cape, I started out by making a base out of white faux fur. I then stitched maribou feathers onto it, and one length of ostrich feathers along the hood. (I wish I could have afforded to the whole thing in ostrich feathers!)

Accessories:
The wig I bought on ebay. The boots I bought online and altered, and the brooch I sculpted, cast in resin, painted, and sewed onto the dress.

History: This was my favourite costume of 2013 🙂
