Captain Marvel – Marvel Comics

Made for: Dragon Con 2015

Background: I wanted to make this a couple of years ago; picked out fabric, ordered swatches, and just never got to it. I lost all my research when I changed jobs, but I decided to start over again and get it done this year!

Patterns Used:
McCall’s 7217

Suit:
Over the course of about 4 days I knocked out my Leia bodysuit and my Captain Marvel bodysuit. The Leia suit was the guinea pig for the Yaya Han McCall’s bodysuit pattern (above), so I’d already worked out the tweaks I’d need to make on the Captain Marvel suit – I just needed to switch up a few of the seam lines at the upper section for the red pieces and piping. It came together really fast!

I used a navy blue jumbo spandex for the majority, and a lighter-weight matte spandex for the red areas. I edited the collar pattern to add a notch and also reinforced it with some interfacing. I added the stripes (wet-look gold spandex) as appliques on top of everything, and then used a gold metallic to do the starburst symbol in the center front.

I was stumped as to how to do the front zipper but then realized only part of my references had a front opening/center piping. I decided to omit it and just do a regular zipper up the back, and it made life a lot simpler.

Boots/Gloves:
I bought these wedge heel boots online – I wanted something that looked practical while still giving me a little height. I made the boot covers out of my red spandex, glued it down to the base and added the side panel sections and buttons. I used the Vogue glove pattern only for the cuff piece – it’s the same red spandex, interfacing, and buttons. After the pain of making my Leia gloves I said screw it and ordered a pair of red gloves online, which I attached the cuff to.

Accessories:
I opted to go for the longer hair look instead of the short, so I could use a wig I already had – though I ended up wearing the wig up at the con because it was so hot. The sash I made of interfacing, red spandex and a couple of snaps. It also snaps onto the bodysuit to keep it in place. I made the brooch out of a metal button cover and worbla.

History: After wearing this at Dcon I think I may need to take it up a little! It’s a little long in the torso. But otherwise I loved it!
