The Mothman

Made for: My birthday party, 2019

Background: I had an alien/Area 51-themed birthday party this year (since my birthday was on the day of the Area 51 Raid), and I was pretty loosey-goosey with the dress code – basically anything alien, conspiracy, Stranger Things, or just whatever you would want to wear to Raid Area 51. I decided I wanted to be the Mothman.

I almost did not include this one in my gallery because there’s really not much to it. But when I think back to some of my questionable old costumes I have listed here… why not. This one has more sewing involved than some of those super old ones that were just slapped together from ebay buys. LOL Also it’s just a nice reminder that not all costumes need to take months of time and a bunch of money.

Outfit:
When I made my Amidala Post-Senate dress last year, I bought 2 bolts of the fabric for the robe, because the fabric was so thick and fluffy, the bolts didn’t have much on them – I thought I might need more than one bolt had. But I didn’t! I had a whole, unopened bolt left over. So I dragged that out and that became my Mothman costume.

I took my Carrie Fisher dress and just laid it out on the fabric and cut around the shape to get the basic idea of a loose dress. I sewed up the side seams and the shoulder seams, and then trimmed some of the excess length off so it was more like a mini-dress. The end. I didn’t hem it or anything.

The cape was just a long length of the fabric – I pinned it onto my dressform, and cut it up the center to about mid-back to create the “wings”. Then I took some wide black elastic, made two loops, and sewed them to the top for shoulder straps. The end. I spent more time cleaning up the shedding bits of this fabric than actually sewing this costume. LOL. Literally I’ve vaccumed my sewing room 3 times in the last week and there’s still more since then, I have to vaccum AGAIN.

Headband:
I had a hard plastic headband in my stash – I just painted it black. Then I took some very bendy wire I had on hand, bent it around the center of the headband to create the antenna. Took two strips of the black fabric and whip-stitched them around the wire forms. Then one more little piece I glued around the center of the headband, to cover the center of the wire and also pad it out from digging into my head at all.

I bought some 2in wide LED lights on amazon, and just added some sticky velcro to them and the headband. So I can pop them off easily for transport/battery changing. They also came with a remote and I can change my “eye colour” to lots of other colours, which was fun LOL.

Then I just wore black tights and black boots. The end.
